The new ones do sound a little different, to my ears my 17 year old Series 1 sounds much more scooped,
very heavy low end with a bright gritty top end. It sounds very aggressive and brittle and is great for slap playing and for rock.
My S2 Classic has a much warmer and more complex tone that works better for pop and R&B music, the onboard preamp has more tone options too. Because it has a truss rod the neck feels a little "springier" like a wood neck and it seems to clatter less than the old bass.
OutToPlayJazz suggested I try turning the bass and treble up to full on the new S2 while leaving the mid switch in the middle "flat" position, this gives a sound much closer to the older basses.
Hopefully with a bit of experimentation you'll find some tones you like from the new bass and you'll grow to love it as much as your old one.
I still love my older Status, but I think the new one is a much more versatile instrument.
